The purpose of the United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) Healthy Roads (HR) program is to help American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals and families develop a healthy lifestyle through empowerment and education that can help them prevent Type-2 diabetes. The HR program offers prevention education sessions derived from a science-based Lifestyle Balance cirriculum proven to prevent or delay the onset of Type-2 diabetes. Through participation in the program, individuals and families can adopt a healthy lifestyle, which is inclusive of a balance between nutrition and physical activity.

The Healthy Roads program also encourages AI/AN individuals and families to participate and utilize other services provided by UAII such as substance abuse treatment, workforce development, medical/dental services, mental health services, and youth services. In this way, AI/AN individuals and families can being their journey living an empowered way of life by making healthy decisions with the support of their community and UAII.

Garden of Health
Working Together for Better Health
Our mission is to facilitate the development of community gardens that will help the American Indian / Alaska Native community reduce their rate of type-2 diabetes by offering healthier alternative food choices(fruits and vegetables), providing nutrition education, and promoting physical activity through gardening and fieldtrips.

We work with American Indian / Alaska Native youth, adults, and elders and are interested in working with staff, volunteers, community gardening sites, community members, and community partners that want to talk about native plants, gardening, growing, harvesting techniques, recipes, health benefits of gardening and diabetes prevention.
Our staff provides cooking demonstrations, access to harvest, opportunities for AI/ANs in our community to grow their own fruits and vegetables.

There are physical benefits that are brought about by gardening and field trips (hiking, group walks/fun runs).
Community gardening is a way to build confidence and expose our youth
and community members to their agricultural heritage as American
Indian / Alaska Native people.
To get more information on the Garden or the Walking Club, please call (213) 202-3970 and ask to speak with someone from the Garden of Health Project.
