Strengthening American Indian Families
(SAIF) Project
The overall goal of the SAIF Project is to improve the well-being of American Indian / Alaska Native (AI / AN ) children by providing healthy relationship education to AI / AN families, couples, and youth; and in developing role models and mentors for healthy relationships.
Services
The SAIF Project offers intensive and non-intensive servics to build healthy
relationships.
Educational workshops for youths, couples, and families, and agencies
Family and couple assessment
Education on building healthy relationships in individual family and couple sessions
Couples therapy
Grouph therapy with adolescents at a group home
Family activities
Developing a family support system through mentoring
Workshops
In workshops and intensive sessions, the following topics are addressed:
-Communication
-Parenting
-Problem-solving
-Handling Conflict
-Negotiating
-Cooperation
-Commitment
-Family changes
-Teaching Values
-Native American cultural values

On an as-needed basis, the following can also be provided:
-Domestic Violence Education
-Health Education
-Nutrition Education
-Career Development
-Money Management Skills

Participant Commitment
Families and couples will meet weekly for four months with a therapist for intensive sissions. Then, they will meet with the therapist once a month for eight months of follow-up. Couples who complete the project will be invited to serve as mentors for other families.
Non-intensive educational workshops are provided on a monthly basis.
Incentives
Participants will receive incentives for regular participation, such as:
-gift cards for certain stores
-restaurant gift cards
-movie passes
-bus tokens and gas cards are provided for those with transportation needs
-Meals and snacks are provided at most workshops
